This is the version reported by Qutayba. The poor among the Emigrants came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, "The wealthy people have taken away the highest ranks and the everlasting bliss."He asked, "How is that?"They replied, "They pray as we pray, they fast as we fast, but they give in charity while we cannot, and they free slaves while we cannot."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Shall I not teach you something by which you can catch up with those who have surpassed you and outstrip those who come after you, so that no one will be better than you except one who does the same as you?"They said, "Yes indeed, Messenger of Allah."He said, "After every prayer, glorify Allah, magnify Him, and praise Him thirty-three times each."Abu Salih said, The poor among the Emigrants returned to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, "Our wealthy brothers have heard what we are doing and they have done the same."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "That is the bounty of Allah which He grants to whomever He wills."Someone other than Qutayba added in this hadith, from Layth, from Ibn Ajlan, who said, Sumayy reported, I related this hadith to one of my family members, who said, "You have made an error. He only said, 'Glorify Allah thirty-three times, praise Allah thirty-three times, and magnify Allah thirty-three times.'"So I went back to Abu Salih and told him this. He took my hand and said, "Allahu akbar, subhan Allah, al-hamdu lillah. Allahu akbar, subhan Allah, al-hamdu lillah," until you reach thirty-three of all of them combined.Ibn Ajlan said, I related this hadith to Raja bin Haywa, and he narrated something similar to me from Abu Salih, from Abu Hurairah, from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.
حدثنا عاصم بن النضر التيمي حدثنا المعتمر حدثنا عبيد الله قال ح و حدثنا قتيبة بن سعيد حدثنا ليث عن ابن عجلان كلاهما عن سمي عن أبي صالح
وهذا حديث قتيبة أن فقراء المهاجرين أتوا رسول الله ﷺ فقالوا ذهب أهل الدثور بالدرجات العلى والنعيم المقيم فقال وما ذاك قالوا يصلون كما نصلي ويصومون كما نصوم ويتصدقون ولا نتصدق ويعتقون ولا نعتق فقال رسول الله ﷺ أفلا أعلمكم شيئا تدركون به من سبقكم وتسبقون به من بعدكم ولا يكون أحد أفضل منكم إلا من صنع مثل ما صنعتم قالوا بلى يا رسول الله قال تسبحون وتكبرون وتحمدون دبر كل صلاة ثلاثا وثلاثين مرة قال أبو صالح فرجع فقراء المهاجرين إلى رسول الله ﷺ فقالوا سمع إخواننا أهل الأموال بما فعلنا ففعلوا مثله فقال رسول الله ﷺ ذلك فضل الله يؤته من يشاء وزاد غير قتيبة في هذا الحديث عن الليث عن ابن عجلان قال سمي فحدثت بعض أهلي هذا الحديث فقال وهمت إنما قال تسبح الله ثلاثا وثلاثين وتحمد الله ثلاثا وثلاثين وتكبر الله ثلاثا وثلاثين فرجعت إلى أبي صالح فقلت له ذلك فأخذ بيدي فقال الله أكبر وسبحان الله والحمد لله الله أكبر وسبحان الله والحمد لله حتى تبلغ من جميعهن ثلاثة وثلاثين قال ابن عجلان فحدثت بهذا الحديث رجاء بن حيوة فحدثني بمثله عن أبي صالح عن أبي هريرة عن رسول الله ﷺ
