Umar bin Khattab delivered a sermon on Friday in which he mentioned the Prophet of Allah ﷺ and Abu Bakr. He said, "I saw in a dream as though a rooster pecked me three times, and I take it to mean that my death is near. Some people are urging me to appoint a successor, but Allah will not allow His religion, His caliphate, or that with which He sent His Prophet ﷺ to be lost. If something happens to me suddenly, the caliphate shall be decided by consultation among these six men with whom the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was pleased when he died.I am well aware that there are people who will challenge this matter, the very people whom I struck down with this hand of mine for the sake of Islam. If they do so, they are the enemies of Allah, the disbelievers, the misguided. Then, I leave behind nothing of greater concern to me than the matter of the kalalah. I never pressed the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about anything as much as I pressed him about the kalalah, and he never spoke harshly to me about anything as he did about it, until he jabbed his finger into my chest and said, 'Umar, does the verse of summer at the end of Surah an-Nisa not suffice you?' If I live, I shall issue a ruling on it by which both those who recite the Quran and those who do not will judge."Then he said, "O Allah, I call You to witness regarding the governors of the provinces. I sent them out only so that they might rule the people justly, teach them their religion and the Sunnah of their Prophet ﷺ, distribute among them their share of the spoils, and refer back to me whatever matters they find difficult. Then, people, you eat two plants which I consider nothing but foul, this onion and garlic. I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, whenever he detected their smell on a man in the mosque, order that he be taken out to al-Baqi. So whoever eats them, let him kill their odor by cooking."
Muslim narrated the hadith of Qatada from Salim from Madan, and I have already noted its defect.Muslim also narrated the hadith of Qatada from Salim from Madan from Umar, attributed only to Umar, concerning garlic and onions, from the narrations of Shuba and Hisham.Three trustworthy narrators contradicted Qatada in this chain, narrating it from Salim bin Abu Jaad from Umar with the chain broken, not mentioning Madan in it. They are Mansur bin Mutamir, Husayn bin Abdul-Rahman, and Amr bin Mura. Jareer bin Abdul-Hameed narrated it from Mansur, and a group narrated it from Husayn, among them Abu Ahwas, Jareer, Ibn Fudayl, and Ibn Uyayna. Imran Barjami narrated it from Amr bin Mura.Although Qatada is trustworthy, and we accept an addition made by a trustworthy narrator, he conceals gaps in his chains, and he did not mention that he heard this from Salim. So it seems likely that it reached him from Salim through another party, and he then narrated it from him as if he had heard it directly.
