I asked Alqama whether Ibn Masud had been present with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on the night of the jinn.Alqama said, "I asked Ibn Masud myself. I said to him, 'Was any of you present with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on the night of the jinn?'"Ibn Masud replied, "No, none of us was with him. But we were with the Messenger of Allah one night and we lost track of him. We searched for him in the valleys and mountain passes, and we said, 'He has been snatched away or assassinated.' So we spent the worst night any people ever spent.When morning came, we suddenly saw him approaching from the direction of Hira. We said, 'Messenger of Allah, we lost you and searched for you but could not find you, so we spent the worst night any people ever spent.'He said, 'A caller from the jinn came to me, and I went with him and recited the Quran to them.'"Ibn Masud continued, "He then took us along and showed us their traces and the traces of their fires. They had asked him for provision, and he told them, 'Every bone over which the name of Allah has been mentioned that falls into your hands will have the most abundant flesh on it, and every piece of dung will be fodder for your animals.'"Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "So do not clean yourselves with these two, for they are the food of your brothers."

سألت علقمة هل كان ابن مسعود شهد مع رسول الله ﷺ ليلة الجن قال فقال علقمة أنا سألت ابن مسعود فقلت هل شهد أحد منكم مع رسول الله ﷺ ليلة الجن قال لا ولكنا كنا مع رسول الله ذات ليلة ففقدناه فالتمسناه في الأودية والشعاب فقلنا استطير أو اغتيل قال فبتنا بشر ليلة بات بها قوم فلما أصبحنا إذا هو جاء من قبل حراء قال فقلنا يا رسول الله فقدناك فطلبناك فلم نجدك فبتنا بشر ليلة بات بها قوم فقال أتاني داعي الجن فذهبت معه فقرأت عليهم القرآن قال فانطلق بنا فأرانا آثارهم وآثار نيرانهم وسألوه الزاد فقال لكم كل عظم ذكر اسم الله عليه يقع في أيديكم أوفر ما يكون لحما وكل بعرة علف لدوابكم فقال رسول الله ﷺ فلا تستنجوا بهما فإنهما طعام إخوانكم
Muslim narrated the hadith of Abdul-Ala from Dawud from Shaybi from Alqama from Abdullah, the hadith of the Night of the Jinn in full, but the end of the hadith is only from Shaybi as a mursal narration from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him and his family.He also narrated the hadith of Ibn Masud, "He showed us the traces of their fires," and what comes after it to the end of the hadith, which is his statement, "and they asked him for provisions," to the end. Ibn Ulaya, Yazid bin Zuray, Ibn Idris, Ibn Abu Zaida, and others likewise narrated it from Dawud. Hafs narrated it from Dawud from Shaybi from Alqama from Abdullah, and he brought its ending as a fully connected narration, but Hafs erred in this. And Allah knows best.
Ali bin Hajar Saadi also narrated it to me, he said, Ismail bin Ibrahim narrated to us from Dawud with this same chain of transmission, up to his saying "and the traces of their fires."Shaybi said, "They asked him for provisions, and they were from the jinn of the peninsula," to the end of the hadith, as a distinct statement from Shaybi, separate from the hadith of Abdullah.Abu Bakr bin Abu Shayba also narrated to us, he said, Abdullah bin Idris narrated to us from Dawud, from Shaybi, from Alqama, from Abdullah, from the Prophet, may Allah's blessings and peace be upon him and his family, up to his saying "and the traces of their fires," and he did not mention what came after that.
