Muhammad bin Sirin reported,

A man came to Umar bin Khattab and said, "A companion of mine and I raced our two horses, competing to reach the gap of a mountain pass, and we struck down a gazelle while we were both in a state of ihram. What is your judgment?"Umar turned to a man beside him and said, "Come, so that you and I may judge together."The two of them ruled that he owed a she-goat. The man then turned away, saying, "This is the Commander of the Faithful, and he cannot pass judgment about a gazelle without calling another man to judge along with him."Umar heard what the man said, so he called him back and asked him, "Do you recite Surah Maidah?""No," the man replied.Umar asked, "Then do you know who this man is who judged along with me?""No," he said.Umar said, "Had you told me that you recite Surah Maidah, I would have given you a painful beating." Then he said, "Allah says in His Book, 'as judged by two just men among you, an offering brought to the Kaaba' [Maidah 5:95]. And this is Abdul-Rahman bin Awf."

عن محمد بن سيرين

أن رجلا جاء إلى عمر بن الخطاب فقال إني أجريت أنا وصاحب لي فرسين نستبق إلى ثغرة ثنية فأصبنا ظبيا ونحن محرمان فماذا ترى فقال عمر لرجل إلى جنبه تعال حتى أحكم أنا وأنت قال فحكما عليه بعنز فولى الرجل وهو يقول هذا أمير المؤمنين لا يستطيع أن يحكم في ظبي حتى دعا رجلا يحكم معه فسمع عمر قول الرجل فدعاه فسأله هل تقرأ سورة المائدة قال لا قال فهل تعرف هذا الرجل الذي حكم معي فقال لا فقال لو أخبرتني أنك تقرأ سورة المائدة لأوجعتك ضربا ثم قال إن الله تبارك وتعالى يقول في كتابه {يحكم به ذوا عدل منكم هديا بالغ الكعبة} وهذا عبد الرحمن بن عوف
