Nafi reported,

Abdullah bin Umar, whenever he sent a sacrificial animal from Madinah, would garland it and mark it at Dhul-Hulayfa. He would garland it before marking it, both being done in the same place, and he would face the qibla while doing so. He garlanded it with a pair of sandals and marked it on the left side. The animal was then driven along with him until it stood with him and the other people at Arafah, and it moved on with them when they departed. When he reached Mina on the morning of the sacrifice, he slaughtered it before shaving or trimming his hair. He used to slaughter his sacrificial animals with his own hand, lining them up standing and turning them toward the qibla. Then he would eat from them and give food to others.
