Nafi reported,

There is no itikaf except with fasting. Allah says in His Book, "And eat and drink until the white thread of dawn becomes distinct to you from the black thread. Then complete the fast until nightfall. And do not have relations with them while you are secluded in the mosques" [Baqarah 2:187]. So Allah mentioned itikaf together with fasting.

حدثني يحيى عن مالك، أنه بلغه: أن القاسم بن محمد،

ونافعا مولى عبد الله بن عمر قالا

لا اعتكاف إلا بصيام يقول الله تبارك وتعالى في كتابه: {وكلوا واشربوا حتى يتبين لكم الخيط الأبيض من الخيط الأسود من الفجر ثم أتموا الصيام إلى الليل ولا تباشروهن وأنتم عاكفون في المساجد} فإنما ذكر الله الاعتكاف مع الصيام.
