He asked Qasim bin Muhammad about a slave of his who had contracted for his freedom and had settled with him for a large sum of money, whether zakat was due on it.Qasim replied, "Abu Bakr Siddiq would not take zakat from any wealth until a full year had passed over it."Qasim bin Muhammad added, "Whenever Abu Bakr distributed the people's stipends, he would ask each man, 'Do you have any wealth on which zakat has become due?' If the man said yes, Abu Bakr would take the zakat of that wealth out of his stipend. If he said no, he would hand over his stipend to him and take nothing from him."

أنه سأل القاسم بن محمد عن مكاتب له قاطعه بمال عظيم هل عليه فيه زكاة فقال القاسم إن أبا بكر الصديق لم يكن يأخذ من مال زكاة حتى يحول عليه الحول قال القاسم بن محمد وكان أبو بكر إذا أعطى الناس أعطياتهم يسأل الرجل هل عندك من مال وجبت عليك فيه الزكاة فإذا قال نعم أخذ من عطائه زكاة ذلك المال وإن قال لا أسلم إليه عطاءه ولم يأخذ منه شيئا
