Muhammad bin Uqba reported,

He asked Qasim bin Muhammad about a slave of his who had contracted for his freedom and had settled with him for a large sum of money, whether zakat was due on it.Qasim replied, "Abu Bakr Siddiq would not take zakat from any wealth until a full year had passed over it."Qasim bin Muhammad added, "Whenever Abu Bakr distributed the people's stipends, he would ask each man, 'Do you have any wealth on which zakat has become due?' If the man said yes, Abu Bakr would take the zakat of that wealth out of his stipend. If he said no, he would hand over his stipend to him and take nothing from him."
