Whenever Abdullah bin Umar was asked about the prayer in time of fear, he would say, "The imam advances along with one group of the people, and the imam leads them in one rakat, while another group of them stands between him and the enemy and does not pray. When those who are with him have prayed one rakat, they withdraw to the position of those who have not yet prayed, without giving the closing salutation, and those who have not prayed advance and pray one rakat with him. Then the imam departs, having prayed two rakats. After the imam departs, each of the two groups stands and prays one rakat on its own, so that each of the two groups has prayed two rakats. If the fear is more severe than that, they pray on foot, standing on their feet, or mounted, whether facing the qibla or not facing it."
