Ubaydullah bin Adi bin Khiyar reported,

While the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was sitting among the people, a man came to him and whispered something to him. No one knew what he had whispered until the Messenger of Allah ﷺ spoke aloud, and it turned out the man was asking permission to kill one of the hypocrites.Speaking aloud, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked, "Does he not testify that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah?"The man replied, "Yes, but his testimony means nothing."The Prophet ﷺ asked, "Does he not pray?"The man said, "Yes, but his prayer means nothing."The Prophet ﷺ said, "Those are the very people Allah has forbidden me to harm."
