Ibn Muhayriz reported,

A man from the tribe of Kinanah known as Makhdaji heard a man in Syria, who went by the kunya Abu Muhammad, saying that Witr is obligatory.Makhdaji said, "So I set out to Ubada bin Samit and stopped him on his way to the masjid, and I told him what Abu Muhammad had said."Ubada replied, "Abu Muhammad is mistaken. I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, 'There are five prayers that Allah has prescribed for His servants. Whoever performs them, neglecting none of them out of disregard for their due, has a covenant with Allah that He will admit him to Paradise. But whoever does not perform them has no covenant with Allah. If He wills, He may punish him, and if He wills, He may admit him to Paradise.'"

عن ابن محيريز

أن رجلا من بني كنانة يدعى المخدجي سمع رجلا بالشام يكنى أبا محمد يقول إن الوتر واجب فقال المخدجي فرحت إلى عبادة بن الصامت فاعترضت له وهو رائح إلى المسجد فأخبرته بالذي قال أبو محمد فقال عبادة كذب أبو محمد سمعت رسول الله ﷺ يقول خمس صلوات كتبهن الله عز وجل على العباد فمن جاء بهن لم يضيع منهن شيئا استخفافا بحقهن كان له عند الله عهد أن يدخله الجنة ومن لم يأت بهن فليس له عند الله عهد إن شاء عذبه وإن شاء أدخله الجنة
