It reached me that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed two units of one of the two daytime prayers, either Dhuhr or Asr, and then gave the closing salutation after only two.Dhul-Shimalayn said to him, "Has the prayer been shortened, Messenger of Allah, or did you forget?"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied, "The prayer has not been shortened, and I did not forget."Dhul-Shimalayn said, "One of the two must be the case, Messenger of Allah."So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ turned to the people and asked, "Is Dhul-Yadayn telling the truth?"They answered, "Yes, Messenger of Allah."So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ completed what remained of the prayer, and then gave the closing salutation.
و حدثني عن مالك عن ابن شهاب
بلغني أن رسول الله ﷺ ركع ركعتين من إحدى صلاتي النهار الظهر أو العصر فسلم من اثنتين فقال له ذو الشمالين أقصرت الصلاة يا رسول الله أم نسيت فقال له رسول الله ﷺ ما قصرت الصلاة وما نسيت فقال ذو الشمالين قد كان بعض ذلك يا رسول الله فأقبل رسول الله ﷺ على الناس فقال أصدق ذو اليدين فقالوا نعم يا رسول الله فأتم رسول الله ﷺ ما بقي من الصلاة ثم سلم
