Abdullah bin Abbas reported,

"The declining of the sun" [Isra 17:78] is when the shadow begins to fall, and "the darkening of the night" [Isra 17:78] is the gathering of the night and its darkness.

و حدثني عن مالك عن داود بن الحصين قال أخبرني مخبر أن

عبد الله بن عباس كان يقول

دلوك الشمس إذا فاء الفيء وغسق الليل اجتماع الليل وظلمته
