Ata bin Yasar reported,

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent a gift to Umar bin Khattab, but Umar returned it.The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked him, "Why did you send it back?"Umar replied, "Messenger of Allah, did you not tell us that it is better for one of us not to take anything from anyone?"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "That applies only to what comes through asking. As for what comes without asking, it is provision that Allah has provided for you."Umar bin Khattab then said, "By the One in whose hand my soul is, I will never ask anyone for anything, and nothing will come to me without my asking for it except that I will accept it."

عن عطاء بن يسار

أن رسول الله ﷺ أرسل إلى عمر بن الخطاب بعطاء فرده عمر فقال له رسول الله ﷺ لم رددته فقال يا رسول الله أليس أخبرتنا أن خيرا لأحدنا أن لا يأخذ من أحد شيئا فقال رسول الله ﷺ إنما ذلك عن المسألة فأما ما كان من غير مسألة فإنما هو رزق يرزقكه الله فقال عمر بن الخطاب أما والذي نفسي بيده لا أسأل أحدا شيئا ولا يأتيني شيء من غير مسألة إلا أخذته
