Saeed bin Musayab reported,

A man from the tribe of Aslam came to Abu Bakr Siddiq and said to him, "The wretched one has committed adultery."Abu Bakr asked him, "Have you mentioned this to anyone besides me?""No," he replied.Abu Bakr said to him, "Then repent to Allah and conceal yourself with the covering of Allah, for Allah accepts repentance from His servants."But his soul gave him no peace, so he went to Umar bin Khattab and said to him what he had said to Abu Bakr, and Umar told him the same thing Abu Bakr had told him. Still his soul gave him no peace, so he came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said to him, "The wretched one has committed adultery."Saeed said that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ turned away from him three times, each time turning away from him, until, when the man kept pressing him, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent word to his family and asked, "Is he ill, or is there madness in him?"They said, "Messenger of Allah, by Allah, he is perfectly sound."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then asked, "Is he unmarried or married?"They said, "He is married, Messenger of Allah."So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ gave the order concerning him, and he was stoned.
