A slave belonging to Ibn Mutawakkil who had contracted for his freedom died in Makkah, leaving behind an outstanding balance on his manumission payments as well as debts owed to various people, and he left a daughter. The governor of Makkah was uncertain how to rule in the matter, so he wrote to Abdul-Malik bin Marwan asking him about it.Abdul-Malik wrote back to him, "Begin with the debts owed to people, then pay off what remains of his manumission price, then divide whatever is left of his property between his daughter and his master."
