During the governorship of Abban bin Uthman, a man freed all of his slaves together, and he owned no property apart from them. So Abban bin Uthman ordered that those slaves be divided into three groups, and then lots were cast to determine which group the deceased man's third would fall to, so that they would be set free. The lot fell upon one of the three groups, and that third upon which the lot fell was freed.
و حدثني مالك
أن رجلا في إمارة أبان بن عثمان أعتق رقيقا له كلهم جميعا ولم يكن له مال غيرهم فأمر أبان بن عثمان بتلك الرقيق فقسمت أثلاثا ثم أسهم على أيهم يخرج سهم الميت فيعتقون فوقع السهم على أحد الأثلاث فعتق الثلث الذي وقع عليه السهم
