The Messenger of Allah ﷺ had intended to have two pieces of wood made that could be struck together to gather the people for prayer. Then Abdullah bin Zayd Ansari, of the clan of Harith bin Khazraj, saw two pieces of wood in a dream, and he said to himself, "These are close to what the Messenger of Allah ﷺ wants."Then he was told, "Why do you not call the people to prayer instead?"When he woke up, he went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and told him about it, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ordered that the adhan be used.
حدثني يحيى عن مالك
كان رسول الله ﷺ قد أراد أن يتخذ خشبتين يضرب بهما ليجتمع الناس للصلاة فأري عبد الله بن زيد الأنصاري ثم من بني الحارث بن الخزرج خشبتين في النوم فقال إن هاتين لنحو مما يريد رسول الله ﷺ فقيل ألا تؤذنون للصلاة فأتى رسول الله ﷺ حين استيقظ فذكر له ذلك فأمر رسول الله ﷺ بالأذان
