A man came to Umar bin Khattab from Abu Musa Ashari, and Umar questioned him about the people there. The man gave him his report.Then Umar asked, "Has any strange news reached you?""Yes," the man said. "A man renounced his faith after having accepted Islam.""And what did you do with him?" Umar asked."We brought him forward and struck off his head," he replied.Umar said, "Why did you not imprison him for three days, feeding him a loaf of bread each day, and call on him to repent? Perhaps he would have repented and returned to what Allah commands."Then Umar said, "Allah, I was not present, I gave no such order, and I am not pleased with it now that word of it has reached me."

قدم على عمر بن الخطاب رجل من قبل أبي موسى الأشعري فسأله عن الناس فأخبره ثم قال له عمر هل كان فيكم من مغربة خبر فقال نعم رجل كفر بعد إسلامه قال فما فعلتم به قال قربناه فضربنا عنقه فقال عمر أفلا حبستموه ثلاثا وأطعمتموه كل يوم رغيفا واستتبتموه لعله يتوب ويراجع أمر الله ثم قال عمر اللهم إني لم أحضر ولم آمر ولم أرض إذ بلغني
