Malik reported,

Abdul-Rahman bin Awf rented a piece of land, and it remained in his possession under that rental agreement until he died.His son said, "Because it had stayed in his hands for so long, I assumed it belonged to us, until he mentioned it to us as he was dying and instructed us to pay off the outstanding rent he owed on it, whether in gold or in silver."

وحدثني مالك، أنه بلغه

أن عبد الرحمن بن عوف تكارى أرضا، فلم تزل في يديه بكراء حتى مات. قال ابنه: فما كنت أراها إلا لنا من طول ما مكثت في يديه. حتى ذكرها لنا عند موته، فأمرنا بقضاء شيء كان عليه من كرائها: ذهب أو ورق.
