Umm Salama reported,

A woman came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, "Messenger of Allah, my daughter's husband has died, and her eyes are troubling her. May she apply kohl to them?"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "No." She asked two or three times, and each time he said, "No."Then he said, "It is only 'four months and ten days' [Baqarah 2:234]. In the days of ignorance one of you would wait a full year and then throw away a piece of camel dung."Humayd bin Nafi said, "I asked Zaynab, 'What does throwing away a piece of camel dung at the end of the year mean?'"Zaynab explained, "When a woman's husband died, she would go into a tiny hut, put on her worst clothes, and touch no perfume or anything else until a year had passed. Then some animal would be brought to her, a donkey, a sheep, or a bird, and she would rub herself against it to end her mourning. Rarely did she rub against anything without it dying. Then she would come out and be given a piece of camel dung, which she would throw away, and after that she could return to whatever she wished of perfume or anything else."
