Thabit bin Ahnaf reported that he married a slave woman who had borne a child to Abdul-Rahman bin Zayd bin Khattab. He said, "Abdullah bin Abdul-Rahman bin Zayd bin Khattab summoned me, so I came and entered his house, and there I found whips laid out, two iron shackles, and two of his slaves whom he had seated there.He said, "Divorce her, or by Him whom men swear by, I will do such and such to you."I said, "She is divorced a thousand times."Then I left him and caught up with Abdullah bin Umar on the road to Makkah. I told him what had happened to me, and Abdullah became angry and said, "That is no divorce. She has not become forbidden to you, so go back to your wife."Still my heart would not settle until I went to Abdullah bin Zubayr, who at that time was the governor of Makkah. I told him what had happened to me and what Abdullah bin Umar had told me.Abdullah bin Zubayr said to me, "She has not become forbidden to you, so go back to your wife." And he wrote to Jabir bin Aswad Zuhri, who was governor of Madinah, ordering him to punish Abdullah bin Abdul-Rahman and to leave me and my wife alone.So I came to Madinah, and Safiyyah, the wife of Abdullah bin Umar, prepared my wife until I brought her in to me, with Abdullah bin Umar's knowledge. Then, on my wedding day, I invited Abdullah bin Umar to my wedding feast, and he came.

عن ثابت بن الأحنف أنه تزوج أم ولد لعبد الرحمن بن زيد بن الخطاب قال فدعاني عبد الله بن عبد الرحمن بن زيد بن الخطاب فجئته فدخلت عليه فإذا سياط موضوعة وإذا قيدان من حديد وعبدان له قد أجلسهما فقال طلقها وإلا والذي يحلف به فعلت بك كذا وكذا قال فقلت هي الطلاق ألفا قال فخرجت من عنده فأدركت عبد الله بن عمر بطريق مكة فأخبرته بالذي كان من شأني فتغيظ عبد الله وقال ليس ذلك بطلاق وإنها لم تحرم عليك فارجع إلى أهلك قال فلم تقررني نفسي حتى أتيت عبد الله بن الزبير وهو يومئذ بمكة أمير عليها فأخبرته بالذي كان من شأني وبالذي قال لي عبد الله بن عمر قال فقال لي عبد الله بن الزبير لم تحرم عليك فارجع إلى أهلك وكتب إلى جابر بن الأسود الزهري وهو أمير المدينة يأمره أن يعاقب عبد الله بن عبد الرحمن وأن يخلي بيني وبين أهلي قال فقدمت المدينة فجهزت صفية امرأة عبد الله بن عمر امرأتي حتى أدخلتها علي بعلم عبد الله بن عمر ثم دعوت عبد الله بن عمر يوم عرسي لوليمتي فجاءني
