He reported from the Prophet ﷺ that he said, "Adam and Musa, peace be upon them, debated with one another. Musa said to him, 'Adam, you are our father. You disappointed us and caused us to be expelled from Paradise by your sin.'Adam replied to him, 'Musa, Allah chose you with His speech and inscribed the Torah for you with His own hand. Do you blame me for a matter that Allah decreed for me forty years before He created me?'So Adam outargued Musa, Adam outargued Musa, Adam outargued Musa," three times.
حدثنا هشام بن عمار ويعقوب بن حميد بن كاسب قالا حدثنا سفيان بن عيينة عن عمرو بن دينار سمع طاوسا يقول
يخبر عن النبي ﷺ قال احتج آدم وموسى عليهما السلام فقال له موسى يا آدم أنت أبونا خيبتنا وأخرجتنا من الجنة بذنبك فقال له آدم يا موسى اصطفاك الله بكلامه وخط لك التوراة بيده أتلومني على أمر قدره الله علي قبل أن يخلقني بأربعين سنة فحج آدم موسى فحج آدم موسى فحج آدم موسى ثلاثا
Bukhari narrated it in the chapters on divine decree, in the chapter "Adam and Musa arguing before Allah," Hadith: 6614, and Muslim narrated it in the chapters on divine decree, in the chapter "The argument of Adam and Musa, peace be upon them both," Hadith: 2652, from the hadith of Sufyan bin Uyayna, through this same chain.
