The Prophet ﷺ met him on one of the roads of Medina while he was in a state of major ritual impurity, so he slipped away. The Prophet ﷺ noticed his absence, and when he came back, he asked, "Where were you, Abu Hurayrah?"He replied, "Messenger of Allah, you met me when I was in a state of major ritual impurity, and I disliked sitting with you until I had bathed."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "The believer does not become impure."
حدثنا أبو بكر بن أبي شيبة حدثنا إسمعيل ابن علية عن حميد عن بكر بن عبد الله عن أبي رافع
أنه لقيه النبي ﷺ في طريق من طرق المدينة وهو جنب فانسل ففقده النبي ﷺ فلما جاء قال أين كنت يا أبا هريرة قال يا رسول الله لقيتني وأنا جنب فكرهت أن أجالسك حتى أغتسل فقال رسول الله ﷺ المؤمن لا ينجس
Bukhari narrated it in the Book of Ghusl, chapter on the sweat of one in a state of major ritual impurity and that the Muslim does not become impure, hadith no. 283, 285, and Muslim narrated it in the Book of Menstruation, chapter on the evidence that the Muslim does not become impure, hadith no. 371, from Ibn Abu Shayba and others, from the hadith of Humayd Tawil, with this wording.
