The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "On the Day of Resurrection, the believers will gather and be inspired, or will be anxious," (Saeed was uncertain which word was used), "and they will say, 'If only we sought intercession with our Lord so He might relieve us of our place.'So they will come to Adam and say, 'You are Adam, the father of mankind. Allah created you with His own hand and made His angels prostrate to you. Intercede for us with your Lord so He may relieve us of this place of ours.'Adam will reply, 'I am not the one for that.' He will recall and lament to them the sin he committed, feeling ashamed of it. He will say, 'But go to Nuh, for he was the first messenger Allah sent to the people of the earth.'So they will come to Nuh, and he will say, 'I am not the one for that.' He will recall his asking his Lord about something he had no knowledge of, and feel ashamed of it. He will say, 'But go to the Friend of the Most Merciful, Ibrahim.'So they will come to Ibrahim, and he will say, 'I am not the one for that. But go to Musa, a servant to whom Allah spoke and to whom He gave the Torah.'So they will come to Musa, and he will say, 'I am not the one for that.' He will recall his killing of a soul without right. He will say, 'But go to Isa, the servant of Allah and His messenger, His word and a spirit from Him.'So they will come to Isa, and he will say, 'I am not the one for that. But go to Muhammad, a servant whose past and future sins Allah has forgiven.'So they will come to me, and I will set out."The narrator said that this phrase was reported from al-Hasan, "And I will walk between two rows of the believers."Then he returned to the narration of Anas. He continued, "I will seek permission from my Lord, and I will be granted permission. When I see Him, I will fall down in prostration. He will leave me as long as Allah wills, then it will be said, 'Raise your head, Muhammad. Speak, and you will be heard. Ask, and you will be given. Intercede, and your intercession will be accepted.' I will praise Him with words of praise He teaches me, then I will intercede. He will set a limit for me, and I will admit them into Paradise. Then I will return a second time. When I see Him, I will fall down in prostration. He will leave me as long as Allah wills, then it will be said to me, 'Raise your head, Muhammad. Speak, and you will be heard. Ask, and you will be given. Intercede, and your intercession will be accepted.' I will raise my head and praise Him with words of praise He teaches me, then I will intercede. He will set a limit for me, and I will admit them into Paradise. Then I will return a third time. When I see my Lord, I will fall down in prostration. He will leave me as long as Allah wills, then it will be said, 'Raise your head, Muhammad. Speak, and you will be heard. Ask, and you will be given. Intercede, and your intercession will be accepted.' I will raise my head and praise Him with words of praise He teaches me, then I will intercede. He will set a limit for me, and I will admit them into Paradise. Then I will return a fourth time and say, 'My Lord, none remain except those whom the Quran has detained.'"Qatada said, following this hadith, "Anas bin Malik also narrated to us that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'There will come out of the Fire whoever said "There is no god but Allah" and had in his heart the weight of a barley grain of good. There will come out of the Fire whoever said "There is no god but Allah" and had in his heart the weight of a wheat grain of good. There will come out of the Fire whoever said "There is no god but Allah" and had in his heart the weight of an atom of good.'"
Bukhari reported it in the tafsir chapter, "The saying of Allah Almighty, 'And He taught Adam all the names'," hadith no. 4476, and Muslim reported it in the book of faith, chapter "The lowest in rank among the people of Paradise," hadith no. 193/323, from the hadith of Saeed bin Abu Aruba, through this same chain.
