The Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed by Saad while he was performing ablution and said, "What is this wastefulness?"Saad asked, "Is there wastefulness even in ablution?"He replied, "Yes, even if you are at a flowing river."
حدثنا محمد بن يحيى حدثنا قتيبة حدثنا ابن لهيعة عن حيي بن عبد الله المعافري عن أبي عبد الرحمن الحبلي
أن رسول الله ﷺ مر بسعد وهو يتوضأ فقال ما هذا السرف فقال أفي الوضوء إسراف قال نعم وإن كنت على نهر جار
[Its chain is daif] Ahmad narrated it, 2/221, from Qutayba through this route. Al-Hafiz weakened it in Talkhis, and Busiri in Zawaid. See also, no. 330.
