The Prophet ﷺ drew a square, then a line in the middle of the square, then several lines branching off from the line in the middle of the square, and finally a line extending outside the square. He asked, "Do you know what this is?"They replied, "Allah and His Messenger know best."He said, "This is the human being. The middle line represents him, and these lines beside him are the afflictions that bite at him from every direction. If one misses him, another strikes him. The square is his fixed lifespan that surrounds him, and the line extending outside is his hope."
حدثنا أبو بشر بكر بن خلف وأبو بكر بن خلاد الباهلي قالا حدثنا يحيى بن سعيد حدثنا سفيان حدثني أبي عن أبي يعلى عن الربيع بن خثيم
عن النبي ﷺ أنه خط خطا مربعا وخطا وسط الخط المربع وخطوطا إلى جانب الخط الذي وسط الخط المربع وخطا خارجا من الخط المربع فقال أتدرون ما هذا قالوا الله ورسوله أعلم قال هذا الإنسان الخط الأوسط وهذه الخطوط إلى جنبه الأعراض تنهشه أو تنهسه من كل مكان فإن أخطأه هذا أصابه هذا والخط المربع الأجل المحيط والخط الخارج الأمل
Bukhari reported it in the Book of Riqaq, Chapter on Hope and Its Length, hadith no. 6417, from the hadith of Yahya bin Saeed Qattan with this wording.
