The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "The example of a man who sits and listens to words of wisdom, then reports from his companion nothing but the worst of what he heard, is like a man who came to a shepherd and said, 'Shepherd, spare me a sheep from your flock to slaughter.' The shepherd said, 'Go and take hold of the ear of the best one among them.' So he went and took hold of the ear of the flock's dog."Abu Hasan bin Salama said, Ismail bin Ibrahim narrated it to us, saying Musa narrated to us, saying Hammad narrated to us, and he mentioned something similar, except that in his version he said, "by the ear of the best sheep among them."
[Its chain of transmission is daif] Ahmad reported it: 2/353, from Hasan bin Musa and Affan, through him. See numbers 116 and 4066 for its defect. Maqdisi graded it hasan by way of another route containing Ali bin Zayd, who is daif, as I have already indicated. Iraqi graded it daif, while Suyuti graded it hasan. Busiri pointed to its weakness, and this is the correct view.
