I was with the Prophet ﷺ on a journey, and one morning while we were traveling I came close to him and said, "Messenger of Allah, tell me of a deed that will admit me to Paradise and keep me far from the Fire."He said, "You have asked about something great, yet it is easy for the one whom Allah makes it easy for. Worship Allah and associate nothing with Him, establish the prayer, pay the zakat, fast Ramadan, and perform the pilgrimage to the House."Then he said, "Shall I guide you to the gates of goodness? Fasting is a shield, charity extinguishes sin as water extinguishes fire, and so does a man's prayer in the depth of the night."Then he recited, "Their sides forsake their beds," until he reached, "as a reward for what they used to do" [Sajdah 32:16–17].Then he said, "Shall I tell you of the head of the matter, its pillar, and the peak of its summit?"I said, "Of course, Messenger of Allah."He said, "The head of the matter is Islam, its pillar is the prayer, and the peak of its summit is jihad."Then he said, "Shall I tell you what controls all of that?"I said, "Yes, Prophet of Allah."He took hold of his tongue and said, "Restrain this."I said, "Prophet of Allah, are we really held accountable for what we say?"He replied, "May your mother be bereaved of you, Muaz. Is there anything that throws people into the Fire on their faces other than what their tongues have reaped?"
[Hasan]Tirmidhi narrated it in the Book of Iman, Chapter on What Has Been Said Concerning the Sanctity of Prayer, no. 2616, from Muhammad bin Umar, and he said it is hasan sahih, and the hadith has supporting witnesses.
