A man praised another man in the presence of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, so the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Woe to you, you have cut your companion's neck," repeating it several times. Then he said, "If one of you must praise his brother, let him say, 'I reckon him to be such-and-such, though I do not declare anyone pure before Allah.'"
حدثنا أبو بكر حدثنا شبابة حدثنا شعبة عن خالد الحذاء
مدح رجل رجلا عند رسول الله ﷺ فقال رسول الله ﷺ ويحك قطعت عنق صاحبك مرارا ثم قال إن كان أحدكم مادحا أخاه فليقل أحسبه ولا أزكي على الله أحدا
Bukhari narrated it in the Book of Manners, in the chapter on the dislike of excessive mutual praise, hadith no. 6061, from the hadith of Shuba, through this route. Muslim also narrated it in the Book of Asceticism, in the chapter on the prohibition of praise when it is excessive and there is fear that it may cause harm to the one praised, hadith no. 66/3000b, from Abu Bakr bin Abu Shayba, through this route.
