I saw Abu Hurayrah striking his forehead with his hand and saying, "People of Iraq, you claim that I lie about the Messenger of Allah ﷺ so that the benefit goes to you and the sin falls upon me. I testify that I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, 'When a dog laps from one of your vessels, wash it seven times.'"
[Its chain of transmission is daif] * Abu Muawiya is described as practicing tadlis (listed in the second tier of the mudallisin), and Amash was mentioned earlier, hadith 178, and both narrated with "an" without specifying direct hearing. Muslim also recorded it, in the Book of Purification, chapter on the ruling regarding a dog licking, hadith 279, through a different route from Amash, in abbreviated form containing only the part attributed to the Prophet. Narrations of the mudallisin in the Sahihayn are presumed to have been directly heard.
