This verse was revealed, "In it are men who love to purify themselves, and Allah loves those who purify themselves" [Tawbah 9:108].The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "People of the Ansar, Allah has praised you regarding purification. What is your manner of purification?"They replied, "We perform ablution for prayer, we bathe after major impurity, and we cleanse ourselves with water after relieving ourselves."He said, "That is it. So hold fast to it."
حدثنا هشام بن عمار حدثنا صدقة بن خالد حدثنا عتبة بن أبي حكيم حدثني طلحة بن نافع أبو سفيان قال
أن هذه الآية نزلت {فيه رجال يحبون أن يتطهروا والله يحب المطهرين} قال رسول الله ﷺ يا معشر الأنصار إن الله قد أثنى عليكم في الطهور فما طهوركم قالوا نتوضأ للصلاة ونغتسل من الجنابة ونستنجي بالماء قال فهو ذاك فعليكموه
[Its chain is hasan] Bayhaqi narrated it, 1/105, from the hadith of Utbah, with this same chain, and Hakim graded it sahih, 1/155, as did Dhahabi. Utbah is hasan al-hadith.
