Abbas bin Mirdas reported,

The Prophet ﷺ prayed for his nation on the evening of Arafah, asking forgiveness for them. The reply came, "I have forgiven them, except the wrongdoer, for I will exact justice from him on behalf of the one he wronged."He said, "My Lord, if You will, You can grant the wronged one a reward from Paradise and forgive the wrongdoer."No reply came that evening. When morning broke at Muzdalifa, he repeated the supplication, and his request was granted.The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then laughed, or smiled.Abu Bakr and Umar said to him, "May our fathers and mothers be ransomed for you. This is not an hour at which you usually laugh. What has made you laugh? May Allah keep you cheerful."He said, "When the enemy of Allah, Iblis, realized that Allah had answered my supplication and forgiven my nation, he took dust and began pouring it over his head, crying out in woe and ruin. His distress is what made me laugh."

عبد الله بن كنانة بن عباس بن مرداس السلمي أن أباه أخبره عن أبيه

أن النبي ﷺ دعا لأمته عشية عرفة بالمغفرة فأجيب إني قد غفرت لهم ما خلا الظالم فإني آخذ للمظلوم منه قال أي رب إن شئت أعطيت المظلوم من الجنة وغفرت للظالم فلم يجب عشيته فلما أصبح بالمزدلفة أعاد الدعاء فأجيب إلى ما سأل قال فضحك رسول الله ﷺ أو قال تبسم فقال له أبو بكر وعمر بأبي أنت وأمي إن هذه لساعة ما كنت تضحك فيها فما الذي أضحكك أضحك الله سنك قال إن عدو الله إبليس لما علم أن الله عز وجل قد استجاب دعائي وغفر لأمتي أخذ التراب فجعل يحثوه على رأسه ويدعو بالويل والثبور فأضحكني ما رأيت من جزعه
