I heard Abu Dharr swear that this verse was revealed about these six men on the day of Badr, "These are two adversaries who disputed concerning their Lord. As for those who disbelieved, garments of fire will be cut out for them" [Hajj 22:19–22], down to His words, "the burning fire". It concerned Hamza bin Abdul-Muttalib, Ali bin Abu Talib, Ubayda bin Harith, Utbah bin Rabia, Shaybah bin Rabia, and Walid bin Utbah, who contended with one another in argument on the day of Badr.

سمعت أبا ذر يقسم لنزلت هذه الآية في هؤلاء الرهط الستة يوم بدر {هذان خصمان اختصموا في ربهم فالذين كفروا قطعت لهم ثياب من نار} إلى قوله {الحريق} في حمزة بن عبد المطلب وعلي بن أبي طالب وعبيدة بن الحارث وعتبة بن ربيعة وشيبة بن ربيعة والوليد بن عتبة اختصموا في الحجج يوم بدر
Bukhari recorded it in the chapter on the campaigns (al-Maghazi), in the section on the killing of Abu Jahl, hadith no. 3968, from the hadith of Waki. Muslim recorded it in the tafsir chapter, in the section on the words of the Almighty, "These are two disputants who dispute concerning their Lord," hadith no. 3033, from the hadith of Ibn Mahdi, from the hadith of Sufyan Thawri, through this same chain. Hushaym followed him in narrating it, saying, Abu Hashim informed us, through this same chain, in Bukhari, hadith no. 3969, and elsewhere.
