Ibn Mura reported from Masruq, from Abdullah, regarding the verse "Do not think of those who have been killed in the cause of Allah as dead. Rather, they are alive with their Lord, receiving provision" [Aal Imran 3:169], that he said, "We asked about this, and he said, 'Their souls are like green birds roaming in Paradise wherever they wish, then they take shelter in lanterns suspended from the Throne. While they are in this state, your Lord looks upon them and says, "Ask Me whatever you wish."They reply, "Our Lord, what could we ask You for when we are roaming in Paradise wherever we wish?"When they realize they will not be left alone until they ask for something, they say, "We ask You to return our souls to our bodies in the worldly life so we may be killed again in Your cause."When He sees that they ask for nothing but this, they are left to their state.'"

بن مرة عن مسروق عن عبد الله في قوله {ولا تحسبن الذين قتلوا في سبيل الله أمواتا بل أحياء عند ربهم يرزقون} قال أما إنا سألنا عن ذلك فقال أرواحهم كطير خضر تسرح في الجنة في أيها شاءت ثم تأوي إلى قناديل معلقة بالعرش فبينما هم كذلك إذ اطلع عليهم ربك اطلاعة فيقول سلوني ما شئتم قالوا ربنا ماذا نسألك ونحن نسرح في الجنة في أيها شئنا فلما رأوا أنهم لا يتركون من أن يسألوا قالوا نسألك أن ترد أرواحنا في أجسادنا إلى الدنيا حتى نقتل في سبيلك فلما رأى أنهم لا يسألون إلا ذلك تركوا
