When that woman stole the velvet cloth from the house of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, we considered the matter grave. She was a woman from Quraysh, so we came to the Prophet ﷺ to speak with him, saying, "We will pay forty ounces as ransom for her."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied, "Her purification is better for her."When we heard the gentleness in the words of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, we went to Usama and said, "Speak to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ."When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saw this, he stood up to deliver a sermon and said, "What is this insistence of yours upon me regarding one of the prescribed limits of Allah that has fallen upon a bondwoman from the bondwomen of Allah? By the One in whose hand is the soul of Muhammad, if Fatimah, the daughter of the Messenger of Allah, had committed what this woman has committed, Muhammad would have cut off her hand."
[Its chain of transmission is daif] Recorded by Hakim in Mustadrak 4/379, 380 (with a corruption in it) from the hadith of Muhammad bin Ishaq with this chain, and he graded it sahih, and Dhahabi agreed with him. The hadith is also found in Musannaf Ibn Abu Shayba 9/466, 467 from Ibn Numayr with this chain, and Busiri said, "This chain of transmission is daif because of Ibn Ishaq's tadlis," see hadith 1209. The preceding hadith serves as a corroborating witness for it, and this is perhaps why Hafiz graded it hasan.
