The Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade us from a practice that had been beneficial to us.I said, "Whatever the Messenger of Allah ﷺ has said is true."He said, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked, "What do you do with your farmland?"We replied, "We rent it out for a third or a quarter of the produce, along with a set amount of wheat and barley."He said, "Do not do that. Either cultivate the land yourselves or let others cultivate it without charge."

نهانا رسول الله ﷺ عن أمر كان لنا رافقا فقلت ما قال رسول الله ﷺ فهو حق فقال قال رسول الله ﷺ ما تصنعون بمحاقلكم قلنا نؤاجرها على الثلث والربع والأوسق من البر والشعير فقال فلا تفعلوا ازرعوها أو أزرعوها
Bukhari narrated it in the Book of Cultivation and Sharecropping, chapter on how the Companions of the Prophet ﷺ helped one another in farming and fruit-growing, no. 2339, and Muslim narrated it in the Book of Business Transactions, chapter on leasing land in exchange for food, no. 1548, from the hadith of Uzai, with the same wording.
