The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "When a person who has the means to repay a debt delays payment, his honor and punishment become permissible."Ali al-Tanafisi explained, "His honor means he may be complained against, and his punishment means he may be imprisoned."
حدثنا أبو بكر بن أبي شيبة وعلي بن محمد قالا حدثنا وكيع حدثنا وبر بن أبي دليلة الطائفي حدثني محمد بن ميمون بن مسيكة قال وكيع وأثنى عليه خيرا
قال رسول الله ﷺ لي الواجد يحل عرضه وعقوبته قال علي الطنافسي يعني عرضه شكايته وعقوبته سجنه
[Its chain of transmission is hasan] Reported by Abu Dawud, Judgments, chapter on whether a debtor may be imprisoned for his debt, vol. 3628, from the hadith of Wabr, and Nasai, Sales, chapter on the wealthy delaying payment, vol. 4693, 4694, from the hadith of Waki through the same chain. Bukhari cited it without a complete chain in his Sahih, and Ibn Hibban graded it sahih, hadith no. 1164, as did Hakim, 4/102, and Dhahabi. Al-Hafiz said in Fath al-Bari, "Its chain of transmission is hasan."
