The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Leave me with what I have left you. Those before you were destroyed only because of their excessive questioning and their disagreements with their prophets. So when I command you with something, do of it what you are able, and when I forbid you from something, abstain from it."
حدثنا محمد بن الصباح قال أنبأنا جرير عن الأعمش عن أبي صالح
قال رسول الله ﷺ ذروني ما تركتكم فإنما هلك من كان قبلكم بسؤالهم واختلافهم على أنبيائهم فإذا أمرتكم بشيء فخذوا منه ما استطعتم وإذا نهيتكم عن شيء فانتهوا
Etc. Hadith no. 1337 above, no. 2357 in the takhrij. It was narrated by Muslim in the Book of Virtues, chapter on showing him reverence, by two routes from Amash, from him. Its original source is in Bukhari, hadith no. 7288, and it has other routes as well.
