The Prophet ﷺ delivered a sermon in which he mentioned women and gave counsel concerning them. He said, "How can one of you whip his wife as he whips a slave, when he may well lie with her at the end of the day?"
حدثنا أبو بكر بن أبي شيبة حدثنا عبد الله بن نمير حدثنا هشام بن عروة عن أبيه
خطب النبي ﷺ ثم ذكر النساء فوعظهم فيهن ثم قال إلام يجلد أحدكم امرأته جلد الأمة ولعله أن يضاجعها من آخر يومه
Bukhari narrated it in the Tafsir, chapter on Surah Shams and its light, vol. 4, p. 94, no. 5204, and others besides him, from the hadith of Hisham with this wording. Muslim also narrated it in the Book of Paradise and its Blessings, chapter, "The tyrants enter the Fire and the weak enter Paradise," no. 2855, on the authority of Ibn Abu Shayba with this wording.
