The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Whatever is given as dowry, gift, or present before the marriage contract belongs to her. Whatever is given after the marriage contract belongs to the one to whom it was given or presented. The most fitting occasion for a man to honor someone with a gift is for his daughter or his sister."
حدثنا أبو كريب حدثنا أبو خالد عن ابن جريج
قال رسول الله ﷺ ما كان من صداق أو حباء أو هبة قبل عصمة النكاح فهو لها وما كان بعد عصمة النكاح فهو لمن أعطيه أو حبي وأحق ما يكرم الرجل به ابنته أو أخته
Its isnad is hasan. Abu Dawud narrated it in the chapter on Nikah, in the section on a man who consummates marriage with his wife before paying her anything, hadith no. 2129, from the hadith of Ibn Jurayj, transmitted through him, and he stated explicitly that he heard it directly, as recorded by Nasai, 6/120, hadith no. 3355.
