We used to give the zakat of Fitr, when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was among us, as one saa of food, or one saa of dates, or one saa of barley, or one saa of dried yogurt, or one saa of raisins. We continued doing so until Muawiya came to us in Madinah, and among the things he said to the people was, "I see that two mudds of Syrian wheat are equivalent to one saa of these." So the people adopted that.Abu Saeed said, "As for me, I will continue to give it as I used to give it in the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, for as long as I live."
حدثنا علي بن محمد حدثنا وكيع عن داود بن قيس الفراء عن عياض بن عبد الله بن أبي سرح
كنا نخرج زكاة الفطر إذ كان فينا رسول الله ﷺ صاعا من طعام صاعا من تمر صاعا من شعير صاعا من أقط صاعا من زبيب فلم نزل كذلك حتى قدم علينا معاوية المدينة فكان فيما كلم به الناس أن قال لا أرى مدين من سمراء الشام إلا تعدل صاعا من هذا فأخذ الناس بذلك قال أبو سعيد لا أزال أخرجه كما كنت أخرجه على عهد رسول الله ﷺ أبدا ما عشت
Bukhari narrated it in Zakat, Zakat, the chapter on the charity of Fitr being a saa of barley, hadith numbers 1505, 1506, 1510, 1508, from the hadith of Iyad through this route, and Muslim narrated it in Zakat, the chapter on Zakat al-Fitr being obligatory upon Muslims from dates and barley, hadith number 985, from the hadith of Dawud and others through this route.
