When they wanted to dig the grave for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, they sent for Abu Ubayda bin Jarra, who used to dig graves in the manner of the people of Mecca with a side niche, and they also sent for Abu Talha, who was the one who dug graves for the people of Medina and made a lahd. They sent two messengers to them, saying, "Allah, choose for Your Messenger." They found Abu Talha and brought him, but Abu Ubayda was not found, so a lahd was made for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.When they finished preparing his body on Tuesday, he was placed on his bed inside his house. Then the people entered upon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in groups, praying over him. Once the men finished, the women were admitted, and after them the children. No one led the people in the funeral prayer over the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.The Muslims differed about the place where he should be buried. Some said, "He should be buried in his mosque."Others said, "He should be buried with his companions."Then Abu Bakr said, "I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, 'No prophet has ever died except that he is buried where he died.'"So they lifted the bedding of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on which he had passed away and dug his grave beneath it. He ﷺ was buried in the middle of the night, on the eve of Wednesday. The ones who descended into his grave were Ali bin Abu Talib, Fadl bin Abbas, his brother Qutham, and Shaqran, the freedman of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.Aws bin Khawli, who was Abu Layla, said to Ali bin Abu Talib, "I implore you by Allah, give us our share of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ."Ali said to him, "Come down."Shaqran, his freedman, had taken a velvet cloak that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to wear and buried it in the grave, saying, "By Allah, no one shall ever wear it after you." So it was buried with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.
[Its chain of transmission is daif] Ahmad narrated it: 1/292, from the hadith of Jareer bin Hazim, in a shortened form. Husayn bin Abdullah is daif (Taqrib). The report that the prophets are buried where they die is sahih, with many supporting narrations found in Tirmidhi, hadith no. 1018, and elsewhere. Ibn Saad narrated with a sahih chain, 2/292, that they said, "Where should he be buried?" Abu Bakr said, "In the place where he died." Ibn Hajar, may Allah have mercy on him, graded it sahih.
