I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ as he was dying. There was a cup of water beside him, and he would dip his hand into the cup, then wipe his face with the water, saying, "O Allah, help me through the agonies of death."
Its chain is hasan. Tirmidhi narrated it in the Book of Funerals, chapter on what has been said about severity at the time of death, hadith no. 978, from the hadith of Layth, with the same wording, and he said, hasan gharib. Hakim graded it sahih (2/56-57, 3/465), as did Dhahabi. In the version of Tirmidhi and others, Yazid bin Abdullah bin Had narrated from Musa with the same wording.Musa was deemed trustworthy by Tirmidhi, Hakim, and others, so his hadith does not fall below the rank of hasan.
