They set out on the expedition of Salasil, but missed the battle, so they remained stationed at the frontier and then returned to Muawiya. Abu Ayub and Uqba bin Amir were with him.Asim said, "Abu Ayub, we missed the campaign this year, and we have been told that whoever prays in the four mosques will have his sins forgiven."Abu Ayub replied, "My nephew, shall I direct you to something easier than that? I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, 'Whoever performs ablution as he was commanded and prays as he was commanded will be forgiven his past deeds.' Is that not so, Uqba?"Uqba answered, "Yes."

أنهم غزوا غزوة السلاسل ففاتهم الغزو فرابطوا ثم رجعوا إلى معاوية وعنده أبو أيوب وعقبة بن عامر فقال عاصم يا أبا أيوب فاتنا الغزو العام وقد أخبرنا أنه من صلى في المساجد الأربعة غفر له ذنبه فقال يا ابن أخي أدلك على أيسر من ذلك إني سمعت رسول الله ﷺ يقول من توضأ كما أمر وصلى كما أمر غفر له ما تقدم من عمل أكذلك يا عقبة قال نعم
Hasan. Nasai reported it, 1/90–91, Purification, Chapter on the reward of one who performs wudu as he was commanded, no. 144, from the hadith of Layth, with this wording, without any doubt in it. Likewise, the group reported it from Layth with this wording, without doubt. Ibn Hibban graded it sahih (Mawarid), no. 166, and Munziri indicated that it is hasan. It has another route in Bukhari's Tarikh al-Kabir, 7/42, and the basic hadith has supporting narrations.Sufyan is Ibn Abdul-Rahman bin Asim Thaqafi.
