Ali bin Abu Talib reported,
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Had I appointed anyone as successor without consultation, I would have appointed Ibn Umm Abd."

[Its chain of transmission is daif] Tirmidhi transmitted it, Chapter on the Virtues, section on the virtues of Abdullah bin Masud , hadith no. 3808, from the narration of Abu Ishaq, with this wording, and he said, gharib, we only know it from the narration of Harith from Ali [see hadith no. 95].
