"Messenger of Allah, shall we call Abu Bakr for you?"He said, "Call him."Hafsah said, "Messenger of Allah, shall we call Umar for you?"He said, "Call him."Umm Fadl said, "Messenger of Allah, shall we call Abbas for you?"He said, "Yes."When they had gathered, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ raised his head, looked at them, and remained silent. Umar said, "Leave the Messenger of Allah ﷺ alone."Then Bilal came to call him to the prayer. He said, "Tell Abu Bakr to lead the people in prayer."Ayesha said, "Messenger of Allah, Abu Bakr is a tender-hearted man whose voice fails him. Whenever he cannot see you, he weeps, and the people weep with him. Why not order Umar to lead the people in prayer instead?"So Abu Bakr went out and led the people in prayer. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ felt some relief in himself and came out, supported between two men, his feet dragging along the ground. When the people saw him, they glorified Allah to alert Abu Bakr. Abu Bakr began to step back, but the Prophet ﷺ gestured to him to stay in his place. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came forward and sat on his right, while Abu Bakr remained standing. Abu Bakr was following the Prophet ﷺ in prayer, and the people were following Abu Bakr.Ibn Abbas said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ took up the recitation from where Abu Bakr had reached."Waki said, "And this is the Sunnah."He said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ died during that illness of his."

Its chain is daif. Ahmad reported it, 1/356, 357, from Waki through this route. See also 46, 1039 for its defect. Qays bin Rabi also reported it, 1158, from Abdullah bin Abu Safar, from Arqam bin Shurahbil, from Abdullah Ibn Abbas, from his father, with similar wording. Ahmad reported it, 1/209, and others.Qays is daif as noted before, so the report has not been established as sound, and it contradicts the hadith of Bukhari, no. 687, and others.
