The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Witr is a duty. Whoever wishes may pray witr with five, whoever wishes may pray witr with three, and whoever wishes may pray witr with one."
حدثنا عبد الرحمن بن إبراهيم الدمشقي حدثنا الفريابي عن الأوزاعي عن الزهري عن عطاء بن يزيد الليثي
أن رسول الله ﷺ قال الوتر حق فمن شاء فليوتر بخمس ومن شاء فليوتر بثلاث ومن شاء فليوتر بواحدة
Its isnad is sahih. Abu Dawud narrated it in Witr, chapter on how many units make up Witr, hadith no. 1422, from the hadith of Zuhri. Ibn Hibban, Hakim, Dhahabi, Nawawi, and others graded it sahih. The hadith is sahih both as a marfu and as a mawquf narration.
