The Prophet ﷺ saw a man praying two rakahs after the dawn prayer, so the Prophet ﷺ asked, "Is the dawn prayer to be performed twice?"The man replied, "I had not prayed the two rakahs that come before it, so I prayed them now."The Prophet ﷺ remained silent.
[Sahih] Reported by Abu Dawud, Voluntary Prayers, chapter on one who missed them and when to make them up, no. 1267, from the hadith of Ibn Numayr, with this wording, and Tirmidhi, 422, and he found fault with it, but it has a sahih corroborating narration in Ibn Khuzayma and Ibn Hibban and others, and Hakim graded it sahih, as did Dhahabi.
