Bara bin Azib reported,

We prayed with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ facing Bayt al-Maqdis for eighteen months. The qiblah was changed toward the Kaabah two months after his entry into Madinah.Whenever the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed facing Bayt al-Maqdis, he would frequently turn his face toward the sky. Allah knew from the heart of His Prophet ﷺ that he longed for the Kaabah. Then Jibreel ascended, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ kept following him with his gaze as he rose between the sky and the earth, watching for what he would bring him. So Allah revealed, "Indeed, We see the turning of your face toward the heaven" [Baqarah 2:144], the verse.Then someone came to us and said, "The qiblah has been turned toward the Kaabah." We had already prayed two rakahs facing Bayt al-Maqdis, and we were in ruku, so we turned and continued upon what had passed of our prayer.The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked, "Jibreel, what is the state of our prayers that we offered toward Bayt al-Maqdis?"So Allah revealed, "And Allah would never have caused your faith to be lost" [Baqarah 2:143].

حدثنا علقمة بن عمرو الدارمي حدثنا أبو بكر بن عياش عن أبي إسحق

عن البراء قال

صلينا مع رسول الله ﷺ نحو بيت المقدس ثمانية عشر شهرا وصرفت القبلة إلى الكعبة بعد دخوله إلى المدينة بشهرين وكان رسول الله ﷺ إذا صلى إلى بيت المقدس أكثر تقلب وجهه في السماء وعلم الله من قلب نبيه ﷺ أنه يهوى الكعبة فصعد جبريل فجعل رسول الله ﷺ يتبعه بصره وهو يصعد بين السماء والأرض ينظر ما يأتيه به فأنزل الله {قد نرى تقلب وجهك في السماء} الآية فأتانا آت فقال إن القبلة قد صرفت إلى الكعبة وقد صلينا ركعتين إلى بيت المقدس ونحن ركوع فتحولنا فبنينا على ما مضى من صلاتنا فقال رسول الله ﷺ يا جبريل كيف حالنا في صلاتنا إلى بيت المقدس فأنزل الله عز وجل {وما كان الله ليضيع إيمانكم}
