Bukhari 764

Bukhari related the hadith of Ibn Jurayj, from Ibn Abu Mulayka, from Urwa, from Marwan, who said, Zayd bin Thabit said to me, "What is the matter with you, that you recite the short chapters from the closing section of the Quran in Maghrib, when I heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him and his family, recite the longer of the two long surahs in it?" It was also narrated from Ibn Aasim, from him.Abu Hasan said, Hisham bin Urwa also narrated it from his father, though there was disagreement over it. Abu Hamza and Ibn Abu Zinad said it came from Hisham, from his father, from Marwan, matching what Ibn Abu Mulayka said. Yahya Qattan, Layth bin Saad, Hammad bin Salama, and others said it came from Hisham bin Urwa, from his father, from Zayd, that he said to Marwan, as a report with an interrupted chain. Likewise, Amr bin Harith said it came from Abu Aswad, from Urwa, from Zayd bin Thabit.

Hafiz said in Fath al-Bari, "Nasai has a narration through Abu Aswad, from Urwa, from Zayd bin Thabit, that he said to Marwan bin Abdul-Malik, 'Do you recite in Maghrib "Say, He is Allah, the One" and "Indeed, We have given you Kawthar"?' Tahawi made explicit, through this same route, that there was direct narration between Urwa and Zayd. So it seems that Urwa first heard it from Marwan, from Zayd, then later met Zayd himself and Zayd told him directly." End of quote.
